Abstract
862,476. Jet propelled aircraft. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. April 18. 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 12371/58. Class 4. An aircraft has a fuselage and an empennage comprising an annular aerofoil located above the fuselage with its axis spaced from and parallel to or inclined to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage, and means at the rear of the empennage for controllably deflecting the flow issuing from the aerofoil. In Fig. 1, the annular tailplane 1 is supported above the fuselage 2 by a faired structure 22, and contains a turbo-jet engine 4 supported by struts 5. The engine nozzle is fitted with hydraulically or otherwise adjustable swilers 23 by which the direction of the efflux from the tailplane can be controlled. An annular set of burners 6 enables the space between the tailplane and the turbojet to be used as a ram-jet. In Fig. 2, the aircraft turbo-jet engine is within the fuselage, and an annular tailplane 16 disposed above the fuselage has four slots 17 at the rear of its inner surface, the starboard slot and parts of the upper and lower slots being shown. Compressed air from the turbo-jet compressor may issue from these slots under the control of valves, so that the direction of efflux from the tailplane can be varied. Alternatively, retractable spoilers may be used.
