Abstract
965,494. Sails. P. M. LEMOIGNE. May 28, 1962 [June 8, 1961], No. 20469/62. Heading B7V. A sail comprises at least one slot, which is adapted to assume, under the effect of the wind, substantially the form of a nozzle capable of allowing a rapidly flowing stream of air to escape from the side of the sail which is not exposed to the wind. In Fig. 1 a spinnaker 1 is formed by a plurality of panels 4 connected by tapes 5. Certain of the panels are only joined on three sides to the tapes so that they comprise a free edge which, together with the edge of the adjacent fabric surface, can form a nozzle 4b. The escaping air is directed tangentially to the surface of the sail and in the case of the spinnaker 1 results in an upward resultant force causing the boat to lift. The invention may be applied to other sails, e.g. storm-jib, main and top sail. The panels may be arranged so that the nozzles are adjacent and direct air streams normal to the surface of the sail to prevent interaction between sails when more than one is used. The Specification also describes a method of manufacturing the sail.
