Abstract

1,271,795. Staying masts. G. C. PALMER. 24 June, 1969 [26 June, 1968], No. 30436/68. Heading B7V. A sailing craft has rigging allowing heeling of the mast, the rigging comprising shrouds 17 between the hull and cross-trees 23 and stays 26, each extending from the cross-trees over an upper pulley and being attached to resilient tensioning means 16. The cross-trees are pivotable on the mast. The tensioning means comprises a spindle (40, Fig. 3, not shown) secured to stay 26 and having an end plate (52) secured by a spring (54) to a frame on the mast. The spindle extends through a floating plate (47) secured by springs (57) to the frame. Heeling of the mast is initially restricted by spring (54), increased heeling causing end plate (52) to engage plate (47) so that springs (57, 51) become effective. The lower end of the mast is secured to two gear-wheels (59, Fig. 8, not shown) on a shaft (60) journalled in underneath the deck. Heeling may be braked by a disc brake acting on shaft (60). The mast and rigging are bodily adjustable longitudinally of the craft.
