The buck of a laundry press is made in two or more parts which can be aligned to form a continuous flat or convex surface for supporting an article to be pressed, and can be disposed at at angle to one another to facilitate loading. As shown, a part 2 of the buck is hinged at 3 to a fixed part 1, movement of the part 2 being effected by a fluid-operated piston-cylinder assembly 11 against the action of a spring 15. The axis of the hinge 3 extends longitudinally of the buck and the part 2 is foldable downwardly to a vertical or near vertical position. An aprong 17 covering the part 2 is maintained free from wrinkles by a spring 12. If employed in a double-buck rotary press, the part 2 may be raised to its operative position either as the buck rotates to the pressing position or as soon as it has reached this position. Modifications.-The movable part of the buck may be manually, mechanically or electrically operated. The fold-down parts may be at one or both ends, and, on a rectangular buck they may be provided on any or all sides of the buck. Alternatively the buck may be in two or more parts, each of which can be moved downwardly from the horizontal position.
