In a rolling mill housing 36 (Fig. 1), for vertical rolls 1, 2, which are driven from a pinion housing 24 disposed to one side of the mill stand, the driving connection between the pinion housing 24 and mitre gears 18, 20 (Fig. 3), for each individual roll 1, 2 comprises a pair of axially displaceable shafts 21, 21a lying in different vertical planes which are parallel to a vertical plane through the axes of the rolls 1, 2. The longitudinal displacement of the shafts 21,.21a during movement of the rolls towards or away from each other is provided by splined portions 22 movable in the pinion housing 24. The rolls 1, 2 are mounted in vertical frames 5, 6, carrying pinion driving gears 15, 16 and a disconnecting sleeve clutch 7. The frames 5, 6 are slidable across the housing 36 under the action of screw-adjusting gear 33a engageable in ball sockets 34 on the frames 5, 6 and driven from motors 30 through worm gears 32. The roll journals 35 (Fig. 4), are clamped in the frames 5, 6 by yokes 40 operated from hydraulic rams 38 through tension rods 39. In removing the rolls 1, 2 from the stands, the frames are first moved towards one another by the screw-adjusting gear 33a until the roll axes are disposed above hydraulically-operated supporting tables 42. The clutches 7 and yokes 40 are then released and the frames 5, 6 withdrawn clear of the rolls 1, 2 which may then be removed vertically by lifting gear.
