Abstract

Natural and synthetic rubber latices are prepared before spray drying by adding a soluble caseinate, ethyl methyl cellulose and a quantity of ions or particles having positive charges. Up to 2% of the ethyl methyl cellulose and up to 4% of an alkali caseinate based on the weight of latex used. The preferred source of ions is a solution of basic aluminium chloride, in an amount of at least 1% by weight of the latex. The latex is preferably acidified before drying. Materials such as zinc oxide, infusorial earth, carbon black or aluminium stearate may be blown p into the drying chamber with the drying gas. In producing powders a dispersion of carbon black in aqueous picric acid may also be introduced without mixing with the latex. Dusting of the particles may also be affected by simultaneously atomizing a latex of a non-sticky polymer. Vulcanizing agents and plasticizers may also be added to the latex before drying. Synthetic rubber polymers referred to are polymers of chloroprene, acrylonitrile-butadiene, methacrylate-butadiene and styrene-butadiene. Specifications 657,772 and 723,315 are referred to.
