Abstract

Powdered polymers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, the particles of which have "sintered," i.e. partially softened, surfaces, are made by dispersing in a gaseous medium a surface-dried powder obtained from a coagulated emulsion polymer and heating the dispersion, e.g. by mixing it with a flow of hot gas, vapour or mist. The emulsion polymer may have been coagulated by the addition of organic liquids, freezing or by violent agitation of the suspension, then washed, dried and powdered by dropping the moist polymer upon a solid surface, e.g. the inside of a rotating drum, in an atmosphere of low relative humidity so as to disintegrate lumps. In an example a polyvinyl chloride coagulum was made by emulsifying vinyl chloride in water with sodium cetyl sulphate, polymerizing at 45 DEG C. in the presence of potassium persulphate, coagulating the latex by adding amyl alcohol, separating the coagulum by centrifuging and washing the coagulum with a sodium bicarbonate solution. The powdered polymers may be compounded with plasticizers. Specifications 589,715, and 661,886 are referred to.
