Abstract

Synthetic rubber, e.g. a copolymer of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile or a polymer of chlorobutadiene, is compounded by coprecipitating such rubber and lignin particles from a latex of the rubber admixed with alkaline lignin solution, separating the precipitate formed but without causing any substantial coalescence of the particles, adding compounding agents while still in a dispersed state, drying the mixture, forming the dried mixture into shapes and curing the articles so formed. In an example, a GR-S latex containing 25 per cent solids was mixed with a 25 per cent solution of lignin in the form of sodium lignate. A 0.8 per cent solution of sulphuric acid heated to 194 DEG F. was added slowly, the resulting precipitate filtered and washed, then placed in a homogenizer, and zinc oxide, benzothiazyl disulphide, copper diethyl dithiocarbamate, and sulphur added and the dried material sheeted. In a further example the filter cake was redispersed and then sprayed or coated on to a backing of paper or textile after which the composite article was cured. Specification 633,725 is referred to.
