Abstract

Agglomerates containing a vulcanization accelerator for compounding into synthetic rubber are prepared by forming an aqueous slurry of water, dibenzothiazyl disulphide, a latex, an antioxidant, and a water-soluble non-volatile stabilizer, and mixing until the latex coagulates, removing the stabilizer and reducing the water content to 50 to 70 per cent of the total mass, forming agglomerates from the mixture, and drying same, the latex employed in forming said slurry containing a maximum of 10 per cent solids by weight, the synthetic rubber content thereof having a Mooney plasticity not greater than 120 at 212 DEG F. and said latex being selected from polychloroprene, polybutadiene, butadienestyrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer latices, the amount of latex in said slurry being such that the synthetic rubber content is at least 4 per cent by weight of the disulphide. The stabilizer may comprise sodium chloride, or sodium or potassium hydroxide and the antioxidant is preferably non-discolouring, e.g. a styrenated phenol.ALSO:Agglomerates containing a vulcanization accelerator for compounding into rubber are prepared by forming an aqueous slurry of water, dibenzothiazyl, disulphide, a latex, an antioxidant, and a water soluble non volatile stabilizer, and mixing until the latex coagulates, removing the stabilizer and reducing the water content to 50 to 70 per cent. of the total mass, forming agglomerates from the mixture, and drying same, the latex employed in forming said slurry containing a maximum of 10 per cent. solids by weight, the natural or synthetic rubber content thereof having a Mooney plasticity not greater than 120 at 212 DEG F., and said latex being selected from natural rubber, polychloroprene, polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene, and butadiene-acrylonitrile latices, the amount of latex in said slurry being such that the natural or synthetic rubber content is at least 4 per cent by weight of the disulphide. The stabilizer may comprise sodium chloride, or sodium or potassium hydroxide, and the antioxidant is preferably non-discolouring, e.g. a styrenated phenol. In an example 500 grams water are added to 42.7 grams butadiene-styrene latex containing a styrenated phenol antioxidant, and the synthetic rubber contents of which has a Mooney viscosity of 47 at 212 DEG F. The diluted latex is mixed with an aqueous slurry of 100 grams sodium chloride, 190 grams mercaptobenzothiazyl disulphide and 2480 grams water until the latex has coagulated. The slurry is then filtered and the residue washed, partially dried, extruded into strings or rods, and dried.
