Abstract

A reinforced vulcanizate is prepared by vulcanizing a composition comprising co-precipitated natural rubber and lignin in the presence of an organic accelerator, an activator consisting of lead oxide or zinc oxide, sulphur, and a modifier consisting of an oxide of copper, lead or bismuth. In Examples, mixes are made from a master batch obtained by co-precipitating lignin or oxidized lignin and rubber latex and stearic acid, phenylbeta-naphthylamine, zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate and sulphur optionally with the addition of N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulphenamide, pine tar, channel black, clay and whiting, and smoked sheet rubber, and to this mixture are added varying proportions of zinc oxide, litharge, red lead or lead dioxide and the mass vulcanized.
