Abstract

A predetermined amount of water is introduced into vulcanizable elastomer compositions by dispersing the water with sufficient finely divided, oxidized or unoxidized lignin, which has been isolated by precipitation from the aqueous liquors obtained from the alkaline digestion of lignocellulosic material to produce a free-flowing, dry-appearing powder, and milling the powder into the vulcanizable elastomer composition. In an example, oxidized lignin having a moisture content of 52 per cent is mixed and vulcanized with a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer composition containing also channel black, stearic acid, zinc oxide, accelerator and sulphur. In further examples, moist oxidized lignin is added to vulcanizable butadiene-styrene compositions also containing substances from the list, tsearic acid, zinc oxide, carbon black, benzothiazole disulphide, copper or zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzthiazole, sulphur, methyl zimate and plasticizers. Specification 664,811, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.ALSO:A predetermined amount of water is introduced into vulcanizable elastomer compositions by dispersing the water with sufficient finely divided lignin which has been isolated by precipitation from the aqueous liquors obtained from the alkaline digestion of lignocellulosic material to produce a free-flowing, dry-appearing powder and milling the powder into the vulcanizable elastomer composition. The lignin material is prepared by heating an alkaline solution of the material to 50 to 80 DEG C. if the lignin is unoxidized, and may be prepared in accordance with the methods of Specification 664,811, [Group IV(b)], and to 70 to 100 DEG C. if oxidized, and then precipitating under agitation by the addition of sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. After reheating the precipitate is filtered and washed. The product is not hygroscopic and should be kept in a stoppered container after the moisture content has been adjusted. In an example, oxidized lignin having a moisture content of 32 per cent was incorporated in a mixture of natural rubber, stearic acid, zinc oxide, zimate accelerator and sulphur.
