Abstract

Particles of polyvinyl chloride containing a softener are obtained by subjecting an aqueous suspension or emulsion containing P.V.C. and a softener to spray drying at 110 DEG -180 DEG C. and are subsequently rendered free-flowing by treatment with a current of a hot gas, e.g. air, at 140 to 200 DEG C. Softeners specified are dioctyl and dibutyl phthalate, higher esters of adipic and sebacic acids and tricresyl phosphate. Suitable emulsifiers, when used, are alkylsulphonates and alkali metal salts of alkysulphuric acid esters. In examples (i) 20% and (ii) 40% of dioctyl phthalate (by weight of the solids) is stirred with an emulsion of 48% P.V.C. and 2,5% sodium alkylsulphonate and the mixture spray dried at 140 DEG C. The product is further dried in a current of hot air at 170 DEG C.
