Abstract

Esters are prepared by heating together an aralkyl halide and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of a dicarboxylic acid in the presence as catalyst of a quaternary ammonium salt. Ammonium or alkali metal salts may be phthalate, isophthalate, terephthalate, succinate, sebacate, maleate, adipate, or isosebacate and the catalyst may be a quaternary ammonium salt of trimethyl- or triethylamine with an alkyl or aralkyl halide. Examples describe the preparation of dibenzyl phthalate.
