Abstract

Vulcanized gas-expanded synthetic rubber is produced by incorporating the reaction product of hydrazine and sulphur dioxide in a vulcanizable rubber mix, shaping the mixture containing the reaction product in undecomposed form, and subsequently heating the shaped mixture so as to evolve gas and then vulcanize the mixture to a cellular mass. The reaction product has the probable formula <FORM:0731520/IV (a)/1> and decomposes at approximately 185 DEG F. The synthetic rubber may be a polymer of butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene; or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile or isobutylene. Specification 692,142 is referred to.ALSO:Vulcanized gas-expanded rubber is produced by incorporating the reaction product of hydrazine and sulphur dioxide in a vulcanizable rubber mix, shaping the mixture containing the reaction product in undecomposed form, and subsequently heating the shaped mixture so as to evolve gas and then vulcanize the mixture to a cellular mass. The reaction product has the probable formula:- <FORM:0731520/V/1> and decomposes at approximately 185 DEG F. In examples, from 0.5 to 2.5 parts of the reaction product are added to 100 parts of pale crepe rubber, the mix also including zinc oxide, whiting, lithopone, zinc laurate, petrolatum, sulphur and benzothiazyl disulphide. Specification 692,142 is referred to.
