Synthetic rubber vulcanizates are prepared by mixing a vulcanizable synthetic rubber polymer or copolymer having a Mooney viscosity below 100 or a vulcanizable ethylene/ propylene/diene-monomer copolymer with a reinforcing, finely-divided, wet-precipitated spray dried silica and a vulcanizing agent and vulcanizing the mixture. The synthetic rubber may be a butadiene polymer, a styrene/butadiene copolymer or a mixture thereof. The silica is preferably obtained by spray-drying an aqueous suspension of freshly prepared, wetprecipitated silica containing 1-20 wt. per cent of SiO 2 in a direct-current type spray drier at an inlet temperature of 300-600‹ C. and an outlet temperature of 100-140‹ C., the proportion of the amount of silica suspension to the amount of hot drying gases fed to the spraydrier being such that a dry product having a loss on ignition of about 10 wt. per cent and an average agglomerate size of 20-150 microns is obtained. The mixtures may also contain active zinc oxide, stearic acid, triethanolamine, mercaptobenzothiazole, tetramethylthiuramdisulphide, sulphur, diphenylguanidine and known tackifiers and softeners, such as petroleum distillates.
