900,160. Making composite metal sheet; rolling. DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE A.G., and CONTINENTAL TITANIUM METALS CORPORATION S.A. Oct. 20, 1960 [Oct. 28, 1959], No. 36057/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of roll plating titanium or its alloys on to iron, steel &c. backings with an interlayer of copper, nickel, aluminium, or aluminium alloy, a stacked assembly, protected from oxidation is rolled at a temperature above the melting point of the interlayer. In examples, foil of aluminium or aluminium alloy 0.2 mm. thick is interposed between a carbon steel plate 50 mm. thick and a titanium sheet 10 mm. thick. The assembly is reduced by 50-70% in a first rolling pass while heated in the range 1000-1250‹ C. and preferably in the range 1050-1150‹ C. and protected by argon gas in a sealed pack.
