Abstract

1,175,453. Electroslag refining. INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IM.E.O. PATONA. 3 Jan. 1967, No. 281/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C7 and H5] In a method of producing by an electroslag process high purity non-ferrous ingots, e.g. nickel or copper, the metal to be melted into an ingot is formed by electrolytic deposition on a cathode and a consumable electrode may be made up of layers of cathode metal produced in sheet form by electrolysis, said sheets being cut into strips and fastened together in bundles e.g. by welding. A consumable or a non- consumable electrode process may be used. A slag is used comprising oxygen-free halides of alkalis and alkaline earth metals, the melting point of the halides being not lower than 800‹ C. 1-30% of alkaline earth metal oxides may be added and a protective gas atmosphere of inert gases, e.g. argon or helium, or active gases, e.g. nitrogen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen or methane, or a mixture thereof, may be used. When nickel is melted the slag may be 70- 90% calcium fluoride plus 10-30% barium chloride, or 50-80% calcium fluoride plus 10-30% barium chloride and 10-20% barium oxide. When copper is melted the slag comprises 50-80% calcium fluoride and 20-50% barium chloride. The melt may be deoxidized by adding carbon, aluminium, magnesium and titanium either separately or in the form of a master alloy.
