Abstract

Solid particles are coated by suspending the particles as a fluidized bed in a gas stream of non-uniform upward velocity such that in one portion of the bed in which the gas stream moves with a relatively high velocity, the particles move upwards substantially out of contact with each other and in that part in which the gas stream moves with a relatively lower velocity, the particles move downwards in substantially weightless contact with each other, the coating materials being introduced into the gas stream at the lower end of the upwardly flowing part of the bed. For producing nonuniformity of gas velocity grids or screens of non-uniform aperture size or in which the "mesh" only covers a portion of the conduit may be placed in the gas conduit. These may be replaced or used in combination with movable "damper" plates. The coating compositions used may be liquids or finely-divided solids, e.g. aqueous sugar solutions and compositions comprising film-forming substances, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose acetate phthalate and zein, natural and synthetic resins, e.g. shellac, alkyl and silicone resins, waxes and waxy materials, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone, glyceryl monostearate and glyceryl monostearate, plasticizing agents, colouring agents and bulking substances, e.g. starch, talc or magnesium carbonate.ALSO:Solid particles, e.g. medicinal tablets, are coated by suspending the particles in an upwardly flowing gas stream containing coating material and causing circulation of the particles in the fluidized bed by directing the gas stream through one portion of the bed at a higher velocity than through another portion, the gas velocity being such that the particles flow upwards in the high velocity region and flow downwardly in weightless contact in the region of lower velocity, the particles p in the upward flowing region being substantially out of contact with each other. The coating materials are directed into the lower end of the upwardly flowing gas stream and for causing the variable gas flow velocity, there may be used grids or screens in which the size of the openings is not uniform or in which the mesh only partially covers the gas conduit in which they are placed beneath the fluidized bed and which may be replaced or used in combination with movable "damper" plates.
