Particulate material to be dried is carried in a stream of gas through a tangential slot into the lower, cylindrical part 2 of a chamber 1 and upwardly through a converging portion 4 to the upper end of an outlet tube 5 which is mounted along the vertical central axis of the chamber, the lower end 9a passing out through the base of the chamber. A helical plate 7 is mounted between the outlet tube and cylindrical part 2 and the outlet tube is axially displaceable.
