[Also in Division F4] Hot gas introduced through a pipe 10 into a drying tower is divided into a hot stream passing through a perforate base 4 and a cylindrical or tapering duct 6 and a stream cooled by a unit 3 and passing through a base 5 and an outer passage 2. Particles to be dried are carried upwards by the hot stream and fall through the cooler stream. They are introduced by an atomiser 13 or set of nozzles in the duct 6. Deposition on the inner wall of the duct may be prevented by a ring of gas formed by nozzles 18 or by electrostatic charges. The particles are discharged into a secondary drier 8. The two gas streams mixing in the space 14 are drawn off through a passage 12 for filtering and re-circulation.
