Apparatus for producing a case-hardening gas in a furnace 2 comprises a vaporizer 1 and a heater 15 supplied with towns gas through a pipe 6, flowmeter 14 and valve 3, and with a mixture of towns gas and methyl alcohol vapour through a pipe 7, flowmeter 13 and valve 4. Part of the towns gas passing through a valve 5 is diverted by a branch 12 through a reservoir 8 of methyl alcohol in which the level is controlled by a float 11 actuating a relay 10 controlling a pump 9. Ammonia can be added to the heated gaseous mixture, the methyl alcohol can be replaced by ethyl alcohol, acetone or iso-butyl alcohol. The towns gas may-be replaced by natural gas.
