The annular vaporizer 1 of a burner is heated at starting by a device 13 which masks the inlet aperture of a flame guide 6 disposed in the central channel 5 of the vaporizer and which comprises a wick 14 and a tubular support 15 through which fuel can be fed to the wick. The starting device may be pivoted to the vaporizer, the vaporizer feed tube 2 or the flame guide 6. The side of the starting device which faces the flame guide 6 may also be made of wick material. Fuel may be burned in a dish disposed below the vaporizer at starting.
