Abstract
Pellated ores produced by agglomerating the finely divided ore with a bituminous emulsion, and baking the resultant pellets, are given a superficial coating of asphaltic bitumen by treatment (spraying or dipping) with a cutback, so that after evaporation of the solvent the bitumen preferably constitutes 0,1 to 5% by weight of the pellets. Suitable solvents are naphthas and hydrocarbon oils.ALSO:Finely divided ores are agglomerated by agitation with a bituminous emulsion to yield pellets containing 5-20% of water, the 'green' pellets being subsequently baked, either in absence or presence of air, in the range 200-350 DEG C. for 1/2 to 24 hours. The proportion and composition of emulsion used is such that after baking the pellets contain 1,5-10% of bitumen. Other possible constituents of the emulsion include inorganic hydroxides or clay as dispersing agents, and soaps (e.g. sodium tallate), petroleum-insoluble pine wood resins and their alkali metal salts, sodium petroleum sulphonates and sodium ligno-sulphonates as stabilizing agents. The aqueous phase may contain thickening agents, such as hydroxy-ethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, carboxy methyl cellulose, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, clays, gums or inorganic salts such as sodium chloride. The baked pellets may be given an increased resistance to abrasion and moisture by spraying with or dipping in a cutback so that the surface coating of asphaltic bitumen remaining after evaporation of the solvent constitutes 0,1-5% by weight of the pellet. In a modification of the agglomerating process the baking stage may be combined with a direct reduction process in a single furnace.
