Abstract
897,225. Valves. FRAZER-NASH, A.G. Oct. 14, 1960 [Oct. 16, 1959], No. 35126/59. Class 135. Upon energizing a pair of solenoids 12 over a switch, not shown, a spring-loaded ball 3 is lifted a small distance off its seat by a rod 10 and allows compressed-air from an inlet 6 to flow via a filter 7 and through a duct 19 to move a piston 21 against spring-loading so connecting the duct 19 to the outlet 26 and translating a shaft 22 thereby opening contacts 27 and de-energizing the solenoids 12; a cam surface 23 on the shaft 22 also lifts the rod 10 to fully unseat the ball 3. When a release mechanism connected to the outlet 26 has been operated the pressure in the outlet 26 builds up and enters a reservoir 33 via an opening 32, the size of which is adjustable by a needle valve, not shown; when the reservoir pressure is high enough it moves a piston 30 to the left, and, through an extension 28, a piston 21 returns the parts to the positions shown so that the contacts 27 close and the ball 3 seats. Accidental operation of the release mechanism due to air leaking past the ball 3 is prevented by providing a vent hole in the duct 19 which is closed by the shaft 22 when it moves rightwardly. The armature extensions 13 of each solenoid 12 are attached to different arms of a lever 15, Fig. 2, each by a lost-motion connection, i.e. whilst pivoted on the same axis as the lever 15 are two further levers 17, each having one arm connected to a different one of the two extensions 13 and each of the other arms of levers 17 carrying a balancing weight. When the armatures are energized they move in opposite directions; should one solenoid fail the lost-motion connection enables the armature to remain stationary whilst the other solenoid effects actuation of the ball valve 3. The ball 3 is urged on to the tapered end of a resilient thin-walled alloy tubular seat 5 by a spring 4 and distorts the seat to ensure a good seal; the whole unit is replaceable upon removing a cap 35.
