583,640. Manually - actuated valves. BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Nov. 10, 1944, No. 22221. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1943. [Class 135] A fluid pressure control device comprises a number of valve mechanisms 7, 27 each of which can be actuated selectively by a control lever 38, the connection between the valves and the lever being of a resilient nature and comprising a single spring 46 positioned between an abutment 47 on the lever and a plate 43 slidable on the lever and contacting the valve stems 12. The lever is universally mounted by means of a ball-and-socket joint 37 and works in two slots 40 at right angles, and it controls two pairs of valve mechanisms at right angles to each other. Abutment 47 is also loose on the lever and is spherically shaped to slide over a similarly shaped part of the valve casing. The lever is held in the neutral position shown by a spring-pressed detent 48 engaging an aperture in the lower end of the ball 37, and it is also held in its operating positions by the detent engaging in a groove 52 in the ball. Each valve mechanism is of the self-lapping type and comprises interconnected inlet and outlet valves 15, 17, respectively, the former controlling the passage of pressure fluid from the inlet 6 to a conduit 24 leading to the device to be actuated, and the outlet valve controlling the flow of fluid through a piston 11 and a port 22 to an atmospheric exhaust conduit 23. When the control lever is actuated to depress piston 11, valve 17 will first close to shut off communication between the actuator and exhaust and valve 15 will be opened against its loading spring 18 to allow pressure-fluid to flow to the actuator. As pressure builds up in chamber 10, it will press on piston 11 until the resistance of spring 46 is neutralized when the piston will rise and allow the inlet valve to close again. A spring 19 keeps valve stem 12 in contact with plate 43.
