Abstract

897,189. Two-part couplings. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 24, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 24802/58. Class 38 (1) [Also in Group XL (a)] A nuclear fuel element carries on one end contact rings 16 and on the other end corresponding contact members. The ring shown has two contact surfaces 17a, 17b of Ni- or Ptplated stainless steel separated by ceramic ring 18 and mounted in ceramic spacers 19; leads to the ring are insulated by ceramic beads and a filling of MgO powder. The contact members are similarly mounted and consist of spring arms 32 with Be- or Rh-plated contacts 33. Fig. 4 shows a shield plug with contact rings 43 arranged to make contact with pairs of sprung contacts 44. These arrangements allow thermocouples on the fuel to be connected to instruments outside a nuclear reactor.
