Abstract

897,020. Drawing. PYRENE CO. Ltd. Jan. 4, 1961 [March 10, 1960], No. 381/61. Class 83 (4). A method of cold working iron or steel comprises forming a phosphate coating on the surface by treatment with an acid solution of a non-coating phosphate and subjecting the coated article to plastic deformation such that the coating is wholly removed. For convenience, alkali metal phosphates are used and the concentration of phosphate in the acid solution, calculated as mono-sodium phosphate is preferably between 1 and 20 g/l. and the pH of the solution is preferably between 3 and 6. The solution should preferably contain an oxidizing agent as an accelerator, e.g. chlorates, bromates, nitrates, nitrites, per-compounds and/or nitrocompounds. The ratio by weight of the phosphate to the accelerator should be greater than 1 : 10 and not greater than 1 : 0.5. The solution should preferably be used at a temperature between 30‹ and 70‹ C. and may be applied by immersion or spraying. Two examples give details of treatment times and the thickness of coating obtained on steel tubes prior to drawing.
