Abstract

896,387. Continuous-casting machines. UNITED WIRE WORKS Ltd. Sept. 1, 1958 [Sept. 13, 1957], No. 28884/57. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XII] A continuous-casting machine includes a holding furnace for molten metal comprising a refractory lined shell 1 incorporating a burner 3 and defining a combustion chamber 4 enclosing a refractory sleeve 15 surrounding and spaced from a dense graphite container 17. A pipe 10 supplies inert gas to the metal through openings 14. A baffle 12 floats on the metal surface to break the fall of fresh metal supplied through a tundish 8, and a fixed baffle 13 with a restricted orifice 24 is disposed at the lower part of the container. Metal escapes continuously through a cooled graphite mould 18 pressed against the container 17 by a screw-threaded tube 26 mounted on a fixed tube 27.
