Abstract
896,364. Valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 1,1960 [July 22, 1959]. No. 23066/60. Class 135. A butterfly valve member 90 having notches in its periphery to permit its pivotal movement relative to a stepped seating member 44 is apertured at 96 and carries a bracket 88 bearing a pin 82 which is connected by a spring strip 78, e.g. of stainless steel, to a movable housing 70 of a power device which contains wax &c. 72 responsive to the temperature of coolant in a motor vehicle engine. A plunger 64 constituting the other element of the power device is fixed at 76 to a bridge-piece 58 which extends between a pair of frame members 54 depending from the seating member. A helico-spiral tension-spring 65 mounted between the housing 70 and tabs 56 on the members 54 acts to compress the power device and close the valve. In a modification, the butterfly valve member carries a peripheral sealing ring for co-operation with a cylindrical seating and is pivoted on a pin carried by brackets on the bridge piece.
