893,872. Hydraulic brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Oct. 29, 1958 [Nov. 2, 1957], No. 34271/57. Class 103 (1). In an hydraulic braking system for a vehicle a pedal-operated tandem master cylinder 30 is provided with separate pressure spaces 28, 29 located respectively between a working (31) and a free (32) piston and between the free piston and the forward end of the cylinder 30 and the brakes 37 on the rear wheels of the vehicle are applied by hydraulic fluid supplied directly from one of the pressure spaces (28) and the brakes 40 on the front wheels are applied by hydraulic fluid supplied at a higher pressure through a booster-operated auxiliary master cylinder 39, 41 under the control of hydraulic fluid supplied from the other pressure space (29). The embodiment shows disc brakes applied to the front wheels and internal shoe-drum brakes applied to the rear wheels of the vehicle. The booster is of the type which is not energized until a predetermined pressure has been generated by the master cylinder 30.
