Abstract

1,012,611. Fluid-pressure braking systems. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Sept. 3, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963]No. 36065/64. Headings F2E and F2F. In a vehicle braking system, a tandem master cylinder 1 comprises pedal-actuated integral pistons 11 and 12 working in independent front wheel brake supply chamber 5 and rear wheel brake supply chamber 6 respectively, chamber 6 having a reservoir port 10 spaced from the piston 12 by a distance less than the spacing of reservoir port 9 of chamber 5 from piston 11 whereby initial pedal movement closes only port 10 to actuate the rear brakes alone and further movement of the pedal closes port 9 to pressurize the front brakes. The system serves to eliminate brake squeal caused by the front brakes being applied lightly at low vehicle speeds. The front and rear wheel supply chambers, and consequently their corresponding pistons, may be arranged in parallel instead of in series as shown.
