Abstract

1384227 Reciprocating pumps D E TURNER 10 Jan 1972 [20 Oct 1970 8 Jan 1971] 49658/70 and 959/71 Heading F1A [Also in Division F2] In a hydraulic system for controlling the setting of hinged flaps acting as air-resistance brakes on a road vehicle, e.g. a motor cycle, (see Division F2), hydraulic fluid is withdrawn from a reservoir (not shown) through a non-return valve 15 into a cylinder 9 by the action of a spring 10 on a piston 8, 8a, and is discharged into an accumulator (for use in the system) through a non-return valve 14 by clockwise movement of the backplate 2 of the internal shoe drum brake of the front wheel of the motor cycle: the backplate is pivotally mounted for this purpose, and the clockwise pivoting movement is effected by frictional engagement between the brake shoes, which are mounted on the backplate, and the brake drum (not shown). (The plate is forced counter-clockwise by spring 10 on brake releases.) A pumping stroke occurs with every application of the brakes, until the fluid-pressure in the accumulator plus the force due to spring 10 equals the brake torque, whereupon clockwise movement of backplate 2 on brake application no longer occurs. Conduits 13, 16, are located in an extension 11 of the pump body which provides a stop for the piston.
