Abstract

893,532. Cutting-apparatus. SAYFORD CO., F. M. April 26, 1960, No. 14516/60. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XVI] Apparatus for forming blanks from paper or similar compressible sheet material comprises means operative on the material along a line defining the blank to compress the material without concomitant cutting of the same and to a degree such that flexing of the material after said operation causes the blank to break from the remaining material along said line. Paper stock 11 is fed through a pair of feedrollers 12, 12<SP>1</SP> and then through cup blank forming rollers 13, 14. The roller 13 includes a plurality of forming or compressing elements 15 each comprising an arcuate base 41, Fig. 5, and a rounded peripheral ridge 42. The elements 15 are separated by a filler material comprising wood blocks 43 and a surface 44 of cork or similar material. The roller 14 includes a plurality of make-up plates 14<SP>1</SP>. After the paper stock has passed between the rollers 13, 14, the stock with the blank still attached passes beneath a stripping-plate 16 having a curved trailing edge 17. The waste stock 11<SP>1</SP> is pulled in an upward direction as indicated by the arrow 18 and this causes the blank 10 to separate from the waste 11<SP>1</SP> at the edge 17 of the plate 16 and continue in the plane of movement of the stock 11. Successive portions of the edges of the blanks 10 are separated and the severed blanks are fed to a moving belt 19. The blanks are then engaged by an upper moving belt 22.
