Abstract

892,588. Latches. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958], No. 42000/58. Class 44. A bolt for a door fastening is spring-loaded and has an asymmetrical head 9 which at one side is chamfered, for example, so that upon this side coming into contact with a keeper as the door is closed the bolt is automatically moved in opposition to its spring; the bolt comprises a sheet metal lath 6 having at one end an integral tongue 7 defining a socket, and the head 9, which is formed of nylon for example, has an integral stem 8 extending through the socket, the stem having at its end remote from the head an integral foot 10 which is shaped so that it can be inserted through the socket but thereafter will prevent withdrawal of the stem from the socket. The stem 8 is movable angularly within the socket to permit the bolt to be used with doors of either hand. The foot 10 may have therein a pair of diametrical slits to improve its resiliency. In a modification, (not illustrated), one end of the lath is bent through a right angle to form a tongue having a hole therein for receiving the foot 10 and the stem which is relatively short.
