Abstract
891,273. Confining fumes generated in industrial processes. UNITED STEEL COS. Ltd. Sept. 26, 1960 [May 30, 1960], No. 19060/60. Class 8(2). An electric arc furnace having an electrode projecting with clearance through a hole in the roof of the furnace has means for directing a curtain of gas, e.g. air, into the clearance space to prevent or reduce the passage of fumes through the space. As described with reference to Fig. 2, the furnace is provided with a housing 1 which surrounds the electrode 3, rests on the furnace roof and includes a water-cooled ring 4 and a gas manifold 5; channels 9 are disposed at equal intervals around the gas manifold, each being provided with a nozzle 10 and being directed inwardly and downwardly relative to the clearance space. The channels 9 are also directed at an angle to the electrode such as to impart a swirl to the gas curtain. Alternatively, the latter may be directed vertically downwards. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), an annular gas manifold has a continuous circumferential slot therein ; alternatively, the gas manifold may be provided with a plurality of slots.
