Abstract
889,625. Magnetic couplings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and POLGREEN, G. R. Feb. 26, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6933/59. Class 35. In a magnetic coupling a permanent magnet 11 having annular polepieces 12, 13 surrounds and excites two coaxial, disc-shaped rotors which have axially-directed peripheral teeth which, when aligned, provide low reluctance flux paths between the magnetic polepieces. The magnet comprises barium ferrite and the polepieces 12, 13, which are of laminated mild steel may also contain a coil 15 which bucks or boosts the magnetic flux and so controls the coupling effect. The rotors comprise two identical non-magnetic, e.g. brass, or aluminium, disc-shaped members 5, 6 provided with peripherally-mounted silicon steel U- shaped projections 7 on their adjacent inner surfaces. Alternatively, the projections may be formed by silicon steel stampings cemented with epoxy resin into peripheral radial slots in each disc. The projections on the driving and driven members tend to align to offer the path of least reluctance and thus torque is transmitted from one member to the other. Beyond an upper limit the coupling slips and alternating current is induced in coil 15 and the slip energy may be dissipated in a resistance 16 or fed to an external circuit and rectified for charging the battery 18 which supplies the coupling control current to the coil 15.
