Abstract

889,524. Casting composite articles. LEPSA S.r.L. Sept. 12, 1960 [Nov. 13, 1959], No. 31308/60. Class 83 (1). Molten metal or alloy is poured on to pelleted metal or alloy of higher melting point and a different S.G. and the mould centrifuged until the molten metal solidifies, there being then no contraction of the body on solidification. A mould for moulding plastics is made by surrounding an electro-formed nickel shell 1 in a metal box 3 with preheated metal, e.g. steel, pellets 7, which may be pickled, supporting a metal 8 of lower melting point and higher S.G. e.g. a bronze nickel alloy on a perforated plate 6, heating the assembly to the melting point of the alloy 8 so that it runs into the voids between the pellets, and centrifuging the assembly in a centrifuge 10. The walls of the box 3, and the surface of the pelleted metal may be coated electrolytically with a thin coating of the low melting point metal. In another example the metal 8 is zinc being of lower melting point and lower S.G. than the metal 7 and is poured thereon.
