Abstract

To obtain from a master pattern a casting in material, e.g epoxy resin, subject to an undesirable degree of shrinkage, a secondary pattern of smaller overall size than the master pattern is produced, a basic casting in the material is produced from the secondary pattern and introduced into a primary mould the cavity of which reproduces accurately the shape of the master pattern, and a layer of the material is cast around the basic casting so that it adheres thereto, whereby the shrinkage is limited to this layer. The secondary pattern may be produced directly from the master pattern or indirectly from a casting obtained from the master pattern in either case by machining away a skin of material which may have a thickness as low as 3/32 inch. The basic casting is formed from the secondary pattern by an intermediate step involving a mould obtained, as may be the primary mould, by depositing electrolytically a layer of metal on to the respective pattern, investing the coated pattern in a moulding material, and then removing the pattern to leave the metal coating as a lining to the mould.
