Sand moulds have prefabricated pouring and riser gates. The gates may be inserted, after removal of the mould from the moulding machine, into tapered apertures formed by pattern portions. Alternatively the gates may be detachably mounted on the pattern so that after moulding they remain in the mould. The gates may be made of a durable material such as fireclay so that they may be re-used.
