Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the collapsing property of a shell mold markedly and to facilitate sand stripping work considerably by coating molding sand with a compsn. consisting of a specific amt. of a phenolic resin and a specific amt. of a Br-contg. org. compd. CONSTITUTION:This is a mold material for shell molds wherein a molding sand is coated with a compsn. consisting of 0.3-7pts.wt. phenolic resin based on 100pts.wt. the molding sand and 0.001-7pts.wt. a Br-contg. org. compd. which splits the Br or Br compd. by heating. With this coated sand, the Br-contg. org. compd. splits the Br or Br compd. by the effect of heating during charging of moltem metal, and the Br or Br compd. acts upon the phenolic resin, then part of the resin forms carbonaceous material, thereby improving the collapsing property of the shell mold markedly.
