CONSTITUTION: Cyclopentadiene type oil and bivalent phenols of 100W50,000 centipoises viscosities at 25°C are allowed to coexist in univalent phenols and aldehydes, and are caused to react in the presence of an acidic catalyst, whereby a novolak type modified phenolic resin is obtained. If molding sand is coated by using this resin, the resin coated sand having good mold strength and molding characteristics and superior collapsing properties of cores or the like for shell molds is obtained. This coated sand is suited for aluminum alloy castings and the like.
