Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the surface hardness of castings by mixing a prescribed amt. of cerium powder with high carbon ferrochrome powder, a phenolic resin and alcohol and coating the mixed materials thereof on the inside surfaces of molds. CONSTITUTION:A titled hardening material consisting of 100pts.wt. high carbon ferrochrome powder, and 0.05-18pts.wt. phenolic resin, alcohol and cerium powder. This hardening material is coated on the inside surface of a mold 1 whereby a hardened layer 2 is provided. Molten metal is charged into a mold cavity 3, and a casting 4 formed with the hardened layer 5 which is hard only at the surface in contact with the layer 2 is cast.
