Abstract

PURPOSE: To cast superior castings which permit cold casting by providing recesses on the surface of a metallic mold in contacting with molten metal and packing molding sand therein.
CONSTITUTION: Recesses 8 are provided on the surface of a metal mold 2 in contact with molten metal and molding sand is packed in these recesses 8. The shape of the recesses to be provided on the surface of the metallic mold in contact with molten metal is not limited to specific shapes. The sizes and distributions of the recesses are so controlled that the area ratios of the surface of the metallic mold in contact with molten metal with respect to the surfaces of molding sand, that is, the area ratios of the recesses are made smaller as the distance from a riser is larger. Thereby, the need for preheating of the metallic mold during casting is eliminated, and mold coating is not required. The resultant castings are less cracked.
