Abstract

PURPOSE: To give an abrasion resistance only to the surface of a cam without application of chill-hardening thereto by a method wherein cam members prepared beforehand with a metal material having the necessary hardness are set in a mold and then melted cast iron is poured therein and made into a unitary body with the members.
CONSTITUTION: Cam members 3 are made of a metal material having relatively high hardness by a method of mechanical working so as to give them the outlines of cam surfaces 4, while inside thereof holes 8 provided with continuous concavo- convex parts 6 and 7 are formed. And, a cavity 12 is formed between upper and lower dies 10 and 11 of a mold for forming a camshaft, the above cam members 3 are set in a prescribed position in the cavity 12, the melted cast iron is poured into the cavity from a port 13, and thus an axis member 2 and the cam members 3 are formed into the camshaft as a unitary body.
