Abstract

887,788. Lubricating systems. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. May 20, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No. 17880/60. Class 12 (3). In an internal combustion engine working on the dry sump principle, the lubricant is circulated prior to starting by a separate motor, driving pumps until a predetermined oil pressure is attained and then circulation is by the engine driving the same pumps. An engine 1 comprises a dry sump 2 having pockets 3, 4, suction pumps 5, 6 which deliver oil to a tank 7, and a pressure pump 14 which delivers oil from the tank to a heat-exchanger 8, an oil filter 9, and thence to a manifold 18 having delivery points 19. An engine starting motor 25 drives the crank-shaft 23, which drives the pump shaft 12 through gears 22, 24, and a motor 10 drives the pump shaft through gears 11, 13 prior to starting the engine. In operation, the sliding pinion 11 of motor 10 engages gear 13 and drives the pumps 5, 6 and 14, thus supplying oil to the manifold 18. When the required pressure is reached, a pressure switch 20 switches off the motor 10 and switches on the starting motor 25. The sliding pinion 26 engages the gear 24 on the crank-shaft 23 and this gear drives the gear 22, which is unidirectional due to a clutch 21 on the pump shaft, and the pumps are actuated. Oil in the circuit is changed by operating the motor 10 to empty the sump and tank through a line 27.
