836,069. Engine turning gear. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Aug. 7, 1958 [Aug. 8, 1957], No. 25057/57. Class 7(5) A battery operated turning gear for an internal-combustion engine comprises a direct current electric motor 15 supplied from the battery 10 and driving a constant speed variable delivery hydraulic pump 16 which feeds an hydraulic motor 17 or 19 which drives the engine. Over-running clutches 18, 20 and starting valves 29, 30 are provided. The pump is for instance a variable stroke reciprocating pump. The invention is described as applied to a twin engihed turbo-prop aircraft. As the engine 12 begins to rotate and accelerate the delivery of the pump 16 is progressively increased without change of speed to supply hydraulic fluid at constant pressure to the motor 17. The condition continues until the pump is operating at full power. The capacity of the pump is selected so that at the speed of the motor reached when the pump is operating at full power the engine is being driven fast enough to enable light up to occur. The battery is connected to a charging system (not shown) which includes direct current electric generators driven from the two engines during flight.
