885,805. Stuffing-box substitutes. PREPARATION INDUSTRIELLE DES COMBUSTIBLES. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 23, 1959], No. 2447/60. Class 122 (5). In a bearing assembly in which the clearance between fixed and rotating parts of the assembly is located in a magnetic field, the bearing is protected against the entry of magnetizable particles through the clearance by arranging the force lines so that particles tending to enter the clearance are attracted away therefrom towards the exterior of the bearing. A roller bearing 1 between a shaft 2 and a hub 3 of a rotary magnetic drum is packed by seals 4 located between a sleeve 5 keyed to the shaft and a cover 6 secured to the hub 3. The cover, hub and sleeve are of non-magnetic material and the magnetic field occurring around the shaft has a high magnetic intensity adjacent a collar 7 on the shaft as indicated by lines 15 which tends to prevent entry of magnetizable particles into the clearance between the cover 6 and the sleeve 5.
