Abstract

884,796. Castor brakes. AUTOSET (PRODUCTION) Ltd. Aug. 8, 1960 [May 8, 1959], No. 15816/59. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XIV] Brake operating and releasing mechanism for a vehicle having at least one pair 6, 7 of castor wheels comprises a manually operable brake lever 14 connected to an axially movable ring 28 associated with each wheel and having associated braking mechanism, e.g. rods 31 and arms 34 connected to internally expanding mechanism, operable by the ring's axial movement, the rings 28 being spring-loaded in the brakeapplying direction so that the brakes are only released when the brake lever 14 is held in a position against the spring-loading. Each ring 28 is provided with teeth 30 to engage a chisel end of the brake rod 31 to prevent the castors swivelling simultaneously with the brake application. Control bar 8 has end sleeves 9 sliding on tubular uprights and a pivoted link 20 connected to a quadrant 21 having an arm 24 with a nylon roller 25 engaging a platform 26 on a forked rocker linked to the ring 28; thus upward movement of the lever handle 14 causes each ring 28 to be raised. The quadrants 21 are interconnected by linkage 35,37.
