Abstract

767,159. Brakes for hand-propelled vehicles. SAGE, H. F. G. Sept. 21, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 29239/54. Class 103 (1). In a locking device for the wheel of a perambulator or like hand-propelled vehicle, a rotor member rotatable with the wheel and having one or more recesses in its circumferential surface, is adapted to be locked by an interlocking plunger mounted non- rotatably on a stator member by a control device operable from the handle of the vehicle to disengage the interlocking mechanism. In the embodiment illustrated, one or each of the rear wheels 14 incorporates a locking device 18 which is controlled automatically by a handle-bar device 15. The locking device 18 comprises a stator 19 fixed to the non-rotatable axle 12. An L-shaped bracket 22 is attached to the stator and carries the lower end of the sheath 25 of a Bowden cable control; the cable 26 of which is attached to the upper end of a locking plunger 27 which is slidable through holes'provided in the circumferential wall 20 of the stator 19 under the action of compression spring 32. A cup-shaped rotor member 37 having an outwardly projecting hub flange 38 for attachment to the wheel spokes 39, is provided with a series of holes 41 which which are disposed in line with the plunger 27 and adapted to receive the bolt portion 28 of the plunger 27 whenever the Bowden cable 26 is released. The handle-bar device 15 is arranged to control the Bowden cable 26 and comprises a transverse front rod 42 and a transverse rear rod 43. The former is attached in ballbearing 44 which acts as a fulcrum for rocking levers 45 ; the rear ends of which are rigidly connected to the rear rod 43, the forward end being attached to cable 26 of the Bowden mechanism. Thus, whenever the hand pressure is removed from the rear rod 43,'the spring 32 brings the plunger 27 into its locking position automatically to prevent accidental movement of the perambulator in forward and rearward directions.
