818,212. Wheel-chair brakes. CLARK, N. B. Feb. 8, 1957 Nov. 17, 1955; April 20, 19561, Nos. 32976/55 and 12149/56. Class 103 (1). A brake for a manually-propelled wheelchair perambulator or the like, comprises an arm 1, pivoted at a point vertically above the wheel axle 5, and having its end 6 bent round so as to envelop the wheel rim 7, the brake arm 1 on engagement with the wheel, having a self-actuating effect according to the direction of movement of the wheel chair and the side of the wheel on which the arm is resting. The brake arm 1 may be pivoted to the chair structure by a bolt 10 secured to a clip 12 bent around the wheel frame structure 2, as in Fig. 4, or in the case of a wooden-framed chair, the arm 1 may be pivotally secured, as by a screw 21, passed through an angle-plate 19, as in Fig. 8. In Fig. 11, the brake is applied to a pair of wheels, on one side of a perambulator, so that movement of the carriage may be prevented both directions, the brake arms 33 being operated by means of a Bowden cable mechanism 38, 41, 65. Fig. 23 shows a double-brake arm mechanism applied to a single wheel, the arms being pivoted together centrally at pin 71 above the axle 73 and operated simultaneously by a Bowden cable 78. In Fig. 26, arms 83 applied to separate wheels, may be released selectively by movement of handle 85 to one side or the other, or released together by movement of handle 85 vertically upward so that pin 92 slides in slot 91.
